Date Scones

I have been wanting to make date scones for so long, as they remind me so much of home. My mum and I both love dates, so it often became our treat whenever we went out. They are also super easy to make.

Tip: If you don’t have self raising flour you can easily make your own. Add 1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder, & 1/4 teaspoon salt to every cup of plain flour and you have self raising.

Ingredients
2 cups self raising flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons white sugar
1 tablespoon butter
1 cup chunky chopped dates
1 egg
150ml milk

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C (395°F).
  2. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar into a large bowl.
  3. Mix in butter. The mixture should still be very dry, almost like breadcrumbs.
  4. Stir in chopped dates.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix together the egg and milk. Stir this to the scone mixture to make a sticky dough.
  6. It’s now time to start kneading. Put some flour down on a bench and knead for about 2 minuets until the dough is nice and smooth.
  7. Section off the dough to your desired scone size. I made about 8 with this recipe. Your scones can either be squares or round, but should have a flat top and bottom.
  8. Add scones to a baking dish and brush the tops with a little milk.
  9. Bake for 15 minuets, less if you have made mini scones.
  10. Eat straight out of the oven with butter, or freeze them for later consumption.

Delicious! I bought such a gigantic pack of dates, that I can probably make these a hundred more times. Let me know how yours turned out!

I am definitely with you on the date scone front – I like mine really crunchy on the outside. The best I’ve had are at Landreth and Co on Ponsonby Road in Auckland (yes not Australia) served with jam and whipped cream. Love the blog!
